Sunday 4th October

League Cup/Plate Preliminary Round

Rams 4 West Drayton Explorers 3

On a warm sunny morning the Rams began their defence of the Cup against a side from division two of the league. At full strength for the first time this season with Sean and Arran returning from injury and sickness the Rams enjoyed a dominant first half to run into a 3 nil lead at half time only to see West Drayton fight back in the second half to bring the game level – before Tom scored a late winner to save any embarrassment on the Rams part.

The Rams had begun in a lively fashion with Corey going close after good work from Arran - and Tom causing chaos in the WD box which resulted in the ball almost being turned into their own goal by the away defence. The Rams were enjoying the extra space their lower league opponents granted them – a Tom cross going just over the bar from Corrie. The Rams continued their relentless pressure Tom heading across goal – James firing a shot just wide. The WD keeper demonstrated he is capable of playing at higher level as he saved a fierce shot from Arran and a chip from Sean. But he was unable to stop the Rams taking the lead on 6 minutes as great work by Tom was followed up by an unstoppable finish from Arran – 1-0.

Five minutes later and the Rams were two up as a Tom free kick was touched in by Corrie at the near post 2-0. In defence there was little for goalie Callum, Jamie and Sean to do as the Rams continued to press forward - Sean sent a shot just wide and Tom curled a free kick over the bar. The WD keeper continued his good work bravely denying Tom but he could do little as Tom burst through the away defence and finished coolly with only the keeper to beat. 3-0. Connor came on for James and Ben for Tom as the Rams continued their excellent first half. The half ended with Callum being called into action for the first time making a good save down to his right – and Ben combining well with Arran to send a shot just wide.

Half time saw Jamie in goal Ben and Callum at the back – Sean up front and James, Tom and Arran in midfield – however it was the away side that came out the stronger and within a couple of minutes of the restart had buried the ball past the helpless Jamie – 3-1.. WD were dominating as the Rams found it hard to get back into the game although Sean had a couple of good chances saved by the WD keeper - the away side one a series of corners which resulted in the ball being hooked over Jamie – 3-2.. The Rams were shocked further when WD equalised from yet another corner and the game looked to be going into extra time as the away keeper bravely saved everything thrown at him. But he could do nothing as Tom slammed the ball home after good work from Arran and Corey.

So great spirit shown by the Rams to pick themselves up in the second half after a resurgent WD had forced themselves back into the game. The boys showed much better teamwork – passing the ball well especially with the extra space in the first half. However Simon will be disappointed to concede two goals from corners. The double is still on........

Well done Tom – 2 goals and MOTM.

Upton hang on for a point Upton 2 Bulls 2

On a warm sunny morning Beaconsfield Sycob Bulls lined up for their season opener against Upton Youth Cougars. Steve made several positional changes, Janni in goal,Lewis in defence and Ollie.G in midfield.

From the kick off the Bulls took charge of the game and some fine passing football created numerous chances and it seemed only a matter of time before the opening goal. But against the run of play Upton won a corner down the right and a well hit centre caused confusion in the Bulls backline but it was a cruel deflection that took the ball past Janni. Upton 1-0.

Last season this was have affected the Bulls but with growing maturity in their play they struck back quickly. First Ollie.P grabbed the equaliser with a fine solo effort drilling home at the near post and the same man bravely notched his brace with a volleyed finish after a clever pass from Ollie.G. Upton 1 - Sycob 2.

On the stroke of halftime a long clearance caught out the Bulls and the Upton striker raced clear to score. Halftime Upton 2 - Sycob 2.

The second half was one way traffic with almost continual Sycob pressure but a combination of bad luck and fine goalkeeping kept the scores level. On the rare occasion Upton threatened Lewis & Josh were strong at the back & Janni made a crucial one on one save.

Big J (Jureme) making his league debut offered strength & threat up front and Max, Jack , Callum, & both Ollie's passed the ball well creating lots of chances that on another day would have secured a comfortable Sycob win.

All in all it was an encouraging first match with lots of positives to take forward.

Well done guys !

MOTM: Ollie P (2 goals)

HILLINGDON 1 RAMS 0

The Rams and their supporters begun the journey to one of the furthest trips they will embark on this season – down the M40 to Hillingdon. The Rams arrived in good spirits after their victory against Real last week and were strengthened by the return of Sean. However Arran was struck down by a mysterious sickness which kept one of the birthday boys out of this fixture. The Rams started with Connor in goal – Callum (second birthday boy) and Ben in defence – Jamie, Corey and James in midfield and Tom up front.

The game started with the Rams under pressure and Hillingdon winning the first corner – Hillingdon produced the early pressure and it took a great save by Connor to stop them taking an early lead. The Rams worked their way back into the game and Corey had a shot that went just wide. The game opened up and whilst Hillingdon pushed forward the Rams were matching them in energy. The first real chance for the Rams came as James surged down the right – passed the ball into Corey who touched the ball onto Tom who let fly with a shot that went just wide. This gave the Rams some impetus and a Corey corner was touched just over, Callum had a good shot saved, and James had a shot just wide. At the other end great defending by James and Ben shut out a determined Hillingdon attack. The half finished with a great tackle on Tom as he surged into the box and a James cross was sent just wide by Tom. HT 0-0

The Rams dominated the restart with James sending a shot just over the bar and a great free kick from Callum being well cleared in the area. Further pressure from Tom resulted in a shot from Sean going just over the bar. However Hillingdon were far from out of it and it took a great save from Jamie to tip the ball over the bar and then a save again from the corner. As the contest continued from end to end great work from Callum and James resulted in Corey sending the ball just over. The next attack saw the Rams unlucky not to take the lead as a goal mouth scramble saw Corey, James, Tom and Ben all have shots saved or blocked. Hillingdon produced a great save from Jamie, James hit the crossbar and Tom tangled with the opposition goal keeper – to the cries of penalty from the away supporters. But a short corner from Hillingdon was fired towards the goal catching the head of a Ram’s player completely wrong footing Jamie – 0-1. Time was too short to come back and the Rams had to reflect on a hard fought game that had not gone their way.

Ben won MOTM for a solid performance at the back.

Whilst anything can be proven or disproven by stats 17 attempts on goal for the Rams against 7 just goes to show how hard the boys fought in this game. However chances will not be easy this year and the boys will need to understand the importance of playing as a team to break oppositions down and the age old adage of taking your chances when they come.

Well done Rams – an unlucky defeat in hot conditions – other sides are finding it tougher too this season – keep believing and a well earned break from the league next week as the defence of the cup starts.

Stats – Corners – SYCOB – 4 – Hillingdon -4

Shots on target – SYCOB- 10 - Hillingdon – 4 off target – SYCOB- 7 – Hillingdon – 3

RAMS 1 Real Holtspur 0

Having narrowly lost the opener last week against Eton Wick the Rams were on the hunt for their first win of the season. This match was always going to be tricky against one of the better sides from last season – but one the Rams managed to beat home and away plus the quarter final of the cup.

The Rams lined up as last week, still missing the injured Sean Chivers with Callum in goal, Jamie and Connor in defence, James, Arran and Corey across midfield and Tom up front. The game started lively with the Rams having possession early on and it wasn’t long before Arran had the first shot on goal. Good work by Corey and Tom then resulted in the ball being cleared off the Real line – with arguably the best keeper in the league beaten. However within a few minutes Andrew Mcdonald proved why he is regarded as one of the top keepers turning away a powerful shot by Tom.

It was Tom again who just couldn’t turn his body to meet a Corey cross and it looked like the game was going to be a frustrating one for the Rams. To their credit Real had learnt from last season and deployed a sweeper at the back to pick the balls being played through to Tom – balls which last year brought so many goals for the young striker.

James having picked up MOTM last week was on fire again turning the Real midfield inside out with his jinking runs down the right. In fairness Real offered little threat up front in the opening half but when they did Connor and Jamie dealt with it with authority. As the half time whistle went Calum was left to reflect on a quiet half in goal.

The second half stared brightly again for the Rams with Ben coming on at right back and Jamie taking the goal keepers gloves. The Rams desperately needed a break through early on and it almost came from the foot of Connor after great work by Tom. However the Rams went one better a few minutes later as another Tom cross was fired in – Connor pulled it back at the far post and Corey rattled in for his second of the season. The match opened up a bit after this, with Real trying to get back into the game. The Rams became increasingly frustrated as they went close on a number of occasions to adding a second. It took a brave tackle on the Rams penalty spot by Callum to deny a certain equaliser and minutes later Ben made a terrific last ditch tackle as Real attacked on the break.

Arran, Tom and Corey all went close but the game ended with a 1-0 scoreline – Jamie like Callum having little to do in goal.

So – another demonstration that the high scoring games of last season will be tougher this campaign. This was a match that the Rams needed to win against a side likely to be pushing them this season and the boys didn’t disappoint. A hard fought win against a good well organised opposition.

Congratulations to Connor for MOTM......

Eton Wick 3 RAMS 2 - 13.09.09

Weather – Fine (nearly sunny)
Pitch – Good (and the right size this year)

The boys arrived full of optimism on the back of their cup and league double last season and an encouraging pre season tournament at Holmer Green. A freak pre season accident deprived the team of the hard working Sean Chivers – who according to his Mum will be out for 4 weeks.

The team lined up with Callum in goal, Jamie and Connor in defence, a three man mid field of James, Corey and Arran with Tom Scott up front. The game started lively with both sides showing good skills on the ball in midfield – however as so often happened last season the early chances fell to the Rams as Corey went close on two occasions testing the Eton Wick keeper, before excellent skill from Tommie Scott resulted in him hitting the bar – a chance that last season would have seen the home keeper picking the ball out of the net for sure. Eton Wick responded by winning a corner and after a goal mouth scramble the Eton Wick number 10 pushed the ball beyond the helpless Callum – 1-0.

The Rams responded well and Arran curled a corner into the near post which the keeper saved. From the resulting goal kick the ball was won by the tireless James Heady who sent a scorching shot just wide. Despite good defensive work by Connor and Jamie – Rams were caught twice more on the break as Eton Wick ran into a 3-0 lead. To the boys credit they didn’t let their heads drop – with Corey, James and Tom going close before Callum pulled off a great save on the stroke of half time for the Rams.

The second half started with the Rams pressing forward at every opportunity – Ben came on and partnered Callum at the back with Connor switching to goal. Tom had some early chances well saved by the home keeper before the Rams got back in the game from an Arran corner which Tom tucked away – 3-1 – The chances were coming thick and fast for the Rams now but the home keeper was keeping them in it – Connor, Ben and Callum repelled any counter attack threat Eton wick had and eventually after great work by Tom – Corey fired the ball home – 3-2. Corrie, James, Tom and Arran all had chances to equalise but dogged defending by Eton Wick meant they beat the Rams for the second season running – see them at home later in the season....However there were enough glimpses of last season to indicate this group of boys will not be giving up their title easily. Hopefully Corey limping off at the end was only a precaution by the coach and not anything serious. Finally James Heady won MOTM for tireless running and tackling in midfield.

A few match stats for you –

Corners – Rams – 9 – EW – 6
Shots – Rams – 12/5(off target) – EW – 7/1
